We as a country are going through very difficult times. Especially after the Mumbai blasts, there is lots of anger that we see in people. That is a genuine anger. None of us can accept such things to happen in our country. We have lost that sense of security. We are so angry on the politicians, our government, Pakistan, etc. None of us approve such kind of barbaric acts.
It is nice to see many people movements have started to fight terror. People lost faith in the government. People coming together to fight is very much needed. We need to fight against evil.
But I have been thinking on this issue for sometime. How can we remove this evil from our society? What are we fighting against? Terror? Corruption? Injustice? Did you notice why people were angry on politicians after the terror attack? Actually they may not have directly involved in the act, but we noticed that their corruption has lead to this situation.
So, what is this evil about? Is it just terror? or corruption? No, it is more. Deceit, slander, hatred, greed, pride, and on and on… Can we fight against terror when you approve hatred? As we saw that we cannot fight against terror if we approve corruption.
We talk about evil in the world, and how to fight against it, but can I ask a question? What have we done to fight the evil in our own hearts? Have we fought to stop telling lies? Have we fought to stop hating your brother and instead loving him unconditionally? We want to fight terror but we profane marriage and approve live-in relationships. We enjoy watching a bollywood item number with all its vulgar dances and justify ourselves by calling it entertainment. We crave after pornography and enjoy sexual chat with anyone. We philosophize and tell there is nothing good or bad and everything is relative. “My good is my good your good is your good”. Sadly that kind of philosophy cannot even say what the terrorists have done is wrong.
If we have not fought with the evil within, I am afraid we can never get the victory over the evil outside. Fighting evil is not an easy battle. We need to pay the price.
Bible says. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it” (Jeremiah 17:9).Only God can change our heart because he took the evil head-on on the cross and paid the price for us.
Only a good heart can make the world good. We can’t make the world good with an evil heart. Bible says “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:26
It may look like I am suggesting that all Christians or so called Christian nations can fight against evil, unfortunately no. Many who call them selves Christians don’t follow Christ. They have not repented of their evil in their heart; their hearts have not been transformed.
But yes, only Jesus can remove hatred and give forgiveness, remove pride and give humility, remove pornography and give purity, remove corruption and give integrity, remove injustice and give justice, remove war and give peace.
We can see that in history and learn. If our country can honestly look to Jesus, it can find the answers, it can find hope. Here is what G. K. Chesterton has said about Christianity “The Christian faith has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult and left untried.”
